Sonja Benskin Mesher: 8. Lions of Bath Gallery...

Last year I was involved in a public art project, King Bladud's Pigs. Following the huge success of this event , I am involved again this year with work for the streets of Bath. A giant pride of 100 individually decorated, life-size lion sculptures, will be taking up residence in and around the World Heritage City of Bath from May to October 2010 in a colourful cultural event to raise funds for local charities and bring a smile to the faces of residents and visitors alike. The lion sculptures, sponsored by businesses, local communities and individuals, will be decorated by artists and craftspeople using their skill and imagination to produce eye-catching artworks from the beautifulto the bizarre. At the end of the summer all of the lions will be auctioned for charity to end their days as fabulous works of art in offices, homes and gardens. My first hurdle is to get the sculpture to the studio in the most time and cost efficient way as possible. Today, 22 January, have finally arranged collection of the Lion, after many frustrating calls to national companies, local man with Van in Bath comes good. The lion, Llewelyn, should arrive on Monday. The lion has arrived and oh so beautiful. We all ran up when the van arrived to see, and laughed as he was carried down the garden path. Wilfred was speechless!! It is beautiful, all white, a shame to paint it really First Lion delvered to Bath, but has been vandalised, so Llewleyn Too has been painted and installed November. Llewelyn is sold. Llewelyn is heading off to a house in Biarritz!!
